TShirts Aplenty
T Shirts were originally worn as undershirts. Now T Shirts are worn frequently as the only piece of clothing covering body tops. T Shirts have also become a medium for self expression and advertising, with any imaginable combination of words, art and even photographs on display. But this was not always the case.
During World War II the T Shirt was the standard issue undershirts in the U.S. Army and the Navy. Although the T Shirt up to that time was formal underwear, soldiers often wore them without a shirt while doing heavy labor or stationed in locations with a hot climate. As a result, the public back home began to see pictures of members of the armed forces wearing pants and a T Shirt. As the war went on the wearing of just a T Shirt gradually became more acceptable.
After WWII the public started wearing just the T Shirt in civilian life. According to the New York Times, the 1948 presidential campaign of New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey produced a “Dew It for Dewey” T Shirt, which was followed in 1952 by “I Like Ike” T Shirts in support of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Then Hollywood began to show John Wayne, Marlon Brando and James Dean wearing just T Shirts in their movies. At first the public was shocked, but by 1955 it became more acceptable.
Since the late 1980’s, T Shirts with prominent designer name logos became more popular, especially with teenagers and young adults. More recently, the popularity of T Shirts has been renewed with slogans and designs. Many today include political or social statements, humor or irony. The trend has only increased as popular celebrities have embraced the attire. With the popularity today, it looks as if T Shirts will continue to be a mainstay of our daily wardrobe.
